28 August 2023

The day prior to this became a pleasing day, but if 8 people met at Schenley Park at 8:30am the temperature was once cool with low clouds and the sky was once clean grey. Most often the birds would have slept in however the migrants have been hungry. We discovered 22 species.

Best possible Chook is difficult to select. Used to be it the belted kingfisher that hunted over Panther Hole Lake? The ruby-throated hummingbirds that floated some of the bushes? Or the warblers — Blackburnian, magnolia and chestnut-sided?

Between birds the insects took middle level. Milkweed insects swarmed on swamp milkweed pods …

… and noticed lanternflies sipped at the Ailanthus bushes that impressed my weblog about sooty mildew on honeydew. I used to be curious: Did the rain wash away the sooty mildew? No.

Fourteen Canada ducks flew over to enroll in the 70 already grazing on Flagstaff Hill. Ducks have been absent from Flagstaff Hill this summer time whilst they molted their wings feathers and didn’t go back in massive numbers till early August.
