11 november 2023

Songbird migration is quiet now and birds, after they’re discovered, are in blended species flocks.

On 7 November, Charity Kheshgi and I encountered agitated golden-crowned kinglets, tufted titmice and dark-eyed juncos but it surely took us some time to seek out what they had been dissatisfied about. This crimson morph screech-owl used to be hiding above our heads in a small oak.

An exception to the blended species flocking rule is our “homicide” of crows. My bet is that Pittsburgh’s wintry weather crow flock is 90% American and 10% fish crows, however who can inform? They appear alike.

In past due afternoon crows degree within the timber in Shadyside and Squirrel Hill, then head west at sundown. 6,000 to ten,000 cross by means of my development on their strategy to the roost.

At sundown black birds in a darkened sky are not possible to {photograph} but it surely’s every other tale at daybreak. Click on at the photograph beneath for a closeup of crows within the brightening sky.

Leaves littered the bottom this week and the air used to be stuffed with the sound of leaf blowers. 🙁

And in the end, a reminder that the rut remains to be in development and deer are crossing roads. This duo confirmed up at a Squirrel Hill polling position on Election Day at a spot surrounded by means of roads. So be careful.
