Final month I wrote about Victoria Falls, Mosi-oa-Tunya, ahead of I’d ever observed them. Our Highway Pupil Birding Excursion visited the realm two times: the Zimbabwe facet on 22 January, the Zambian facet 8 days later. Whilst there I discovered that the falls in point of fact are “the smoke that thunders.”
This marked-up aerial view displays the viewpoints the place my pictures and movies have been taken.
The Satan’s Cataract, at the a ways left facet of the falls, is the place the crack starts that can some day turn out to be the brand new fall line.
The Risk Level on the a ways finish of the Zimbabwe facet is nearer to the falling water. It used to be very misty, nearly otherworldly. We wore raincoats.
As we left on 22 January we stopped on the fail to remember for the previous Victoria Falls Bridge that spans the outflow of the Zambezi River. Other people pay to bungee soar 364 ft from the bridge into the canyon. I didn’t wish to watch.
We went there to search out Schalow’s turaco (Tauraco schalowi), a fruit-eating African fowl that frequents riparian habitats … and we have been in success! One flew via and landed close to us. Those eBird pictures display its gorgeous colours.
On 30 January we returned to Victoria Falls at the Zambia facet the place the water used to be even nearer and extra dramatic. Those that wish to stroll to Livingstone Island or the Satan’s Pool all through low water get started their adventure in this facet, strolling 1 km (greater than 2/3 mile).
No approach! Glance how briskly the water rushes towards the cliff …
… and falls down the opposite facet.
We crossed the Knife’s Edge Bridge …
… to finish our excursion of The Smoke That Thunders.
