Avian flu moves North Carolina turkeys once more


The presence of extremely pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in some other industrial turkey flock in North Carolina.

America Division of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Well being Inspection Carrier (APHIS) reported that HPAI was once showed a flock in Duplin County on February 20. There have been 20,900 birds in that flock.

That is the second one case of HPAI to be reported in a industrial poultry flock in North Carolina in 2024, with each instances involving meat turkeys. The sooner reported case was once a flock of 32,400 industrial turkeys in Lenoir County, with APHIS officers confirming that on February 9.

Either one of those flock infections come after North Carolina went all of 2023 with none circumstances of HPAI in industrial operations.

The state had 9 industrial poultry flocks suffering from HPAI in 2022, resulting in the lack of 481,400 birds. None of the ones instances have been in Duplin County.

Up to now in 2024, the next states have had showed instances of HPAI in industrial operations: North Carolina Wisconsin, Colorado, Nebraska, Indiana, South Dakota, Kansas and California. In Canada, the provinces of Alberta, Ontario and Quebec have had industrial poultry operations suffering from the virus.
