Worm season brings pests but in addition attractiveness. One in all my favorites is that this refined damselfly, the ebony jewelwing (Calopteryx maculata), named for the men’ black wings with steel blue-green edges. Their our bodies are glossy blue-green, too.
The women folk are much less flashy, darkly coloured with white spots on the pointers of the wings. When a feminine flies within the woodland gloom the white pointers are all you spot.
Ebony jewelwings want wooded habitats close to creeks and streams the place they flit from leaf to leaf. In early July in Frick Park we noticed men and women relationship and jostling for territory. Once they mate they shape a center form with their our bodies.
Damselflies, like dragonflies, are carnivorous. The adults take bugs from the air; nymphs take them within the water.
Watch the jewelwings fly and mate and two women folk lay eggs within the movement on this video from Canada. I like how they flash open their wings.
