For 3 mins the previous day afternoon, other people in a large swath of the U.S. from Texas to Maine had been wowed by means of the full sun eclipse. Pittsburgh and Dubois, PA, simply east of the totality zone, had been each shut sufficient to enjoy a 97% eclipse. Our gentle degree was once like nightfall and the temperature were given cooler. Charity Kheshgi captured the partial eclipse in Pittsburgh at 3:17 to a few:20pm.

In the meantime Marianne Atkinson spotted a metamorphosis in honeybee conduct at her house in Dubois, PA. She’s offering a honeybee feeder this spring, full of sugar water, to feed hungry bees within the early days ahead of the vegetation bloom. The day prior to this morning her feeder was once mobbed with honeybees and was once working dry.

There have been too many bees for her to securely replenish the feeder so she put out a 2d one (white rim). It was once mobbed, too.

After which the eclipse started. Marianne describes what came about.

I had simply added a 2d honey bee feeder this afternoon, now not lengthy ahead of the eclipse began. However, all over the eclipse at 97%, there have been only a few bees on both feeder! The yellow feeder best had two bees and the gravel feeder had 3 bees. I took this chance so as to add extra nectar to the yellow feeder, because it was once empty.

[Meanwhile] The various American Goldfinches and Pine Siskins had been chattering away within the bushes within reach all over the entire eclipse. The sky had gotten slightly darker, however now not darkish like a sun eclipse in totality. There have been clouds all over many of the eclipse, with occasional peaks of solar or seeing it via skinny clouds. I used to be in a position to view it on and off.

Honeybees are diurnal and they go back to their hive at nightfall to spend the night time indoors. It appears the sunshine degree all over a 97% eclipse is low sufficient to recommended bees to move house. After the eclipse the honeybees got here again briefly to each feeders. Marianne stated, “They’d only in the near past found out the pea gravel feeder, however didn’t waste any time in using it!”
