A Non-public Number of 13 watercolours and sketches through Louis Wain (1860-1939) who was once well-known for his depictions of funny cats are coming to the marketplace for the primary time in 50 years when they’re going to be presented through Parker Positive Artwork Auctions in a sale of Positive Art work and Frames on Thursday, October 3, 2024, beginning at 11am in Farnham, Surrey. The gathering is anticipated to fetch between £30,000 to 40,000 and are being offered through her son.
Henny Smith, Director of Parker Positive Artwork explains: “Louis Wain is synonymous with growing human- like depictions of cats and this assortment presentations cats in hats; with superb facial expressions; at the seashore or even stealing chickens!”
She persevered: “This assortment was once accrued through a woman who labored in vintage retail outlets within the Nineteen Forties and 50s. She began to assemble Wain because of her love of cats – she owned breeds akin to a Blue Burmese and Abyssinians – and the humour she discovered within the works through Wain.”
The estimates vary from £200 to £15,000 and a few of the highlights “Christmas Buying groceries”, an en grisaille that depicts cats buying groceries at a butcher, which was once purchased from the London broker Michael Parkin on Christmas Eve in 1986, is anticipated to fetch between £10,000 to £15,000 [lot 182]. A pen, ink and watercolour titled “I guarantee you I’m somewhat sober” carries an estimate of £5,000-8,000 [lot 168]. In other places, a lithograph titled “The Conductor” is estimated at £200-£300 [lot 177] and a Fortunate Haw Haw Cat vase made for Max Emanuel and Co. carries an estimate of £300-£500 [lot 174].
