21 January 2024: Day 3, Marievale Fowl Sanctuary — Highway Pupil Southern Africa Birding Safari. Click on right here to peer (most often) the place I’m as of late.

These days we’re birding at Marievale Fowl Sanctuary southeast of Johannesburg. Within the 3rd week of January it’s mid-summer in South Africa, very similar to July within the U.S.

Most of the birds at Marievale are very similar to the ones in Florida. For example, the African spoonbill pictured above resembles our roseate spoonbill. (I favor the roseate spoonbill as a result of it’s gorgeous purple.)

There also are a number of species which might be local in each puts: fulvous whistling duck, not unusual moorhen, livestock egret, nice egret, shiny ibis, barn swallow and peregrine falcon. At Marievale *no longer* each hen is a Lifestyles Fowl.

See Marievale’s birds within the 8-minute video under and also you, too, would possibly conclude that South African marsh birds are the similar as Florida’s and but they’re other. After the video I’ve equipped a desk with the names of equivalent North American species.
