9 July 2024
July is in most cases a run of the mill month for peregrines in Pittsburgh. It’s sizzling. Nest tasks are over. The adults are molting. However this week there are two bits of reports.
Monaca-East Rochester Bridge:
On Monday morning, 8 July, Jeff Cieslak checked for peregrines alongside the Ohio River and stopped by way of the Monaca-East Rochester Bridge. He in most cases seems at the Monaca (south) facet however the previous day he checked East Rochester (north) as smartly. There he discovered two fledglings and one grownup, pictured right here.

The Monaca fledglings seem to be about 4-5 weeks more youthful than the ones at Pitt, striking their hatch date in past due Might and egg laying in mid-to-late April. This sort of past due nest makes me wonder whether the primary nest failed or if there used to be upheaval at this website with a transformation of companions that took till April to calm down. We’ll by no means know.
Cathedral of Studying: What used to be she having a look at?

On Sunday 7 July Carla visited the nest from 5:08p to 7:36pm. In that 90 minute duration she used to be very alert when jumped she as much as the snapshot digital camera. I ponder what she used to be having a look at.
p.s. You’ll understand Carla’s feathers aren’t in particular clean. She’s molting.
